The researchers in the present study sought to investigate Social Studies teachers' perception of the effects of television viewing on the academic attainment of lower basic pupils in Calabar South, Cross River State, Nigeria. The effect of television viewing has been perceived differently in different quarters as having certain effects on pupils' academic attainment. Results of data analysis revealed that teaching mentoring significantly related to lecturers' professional competence in terms of lesson presentation, teaching method and students' assessment. The hypothesis raised was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data collected were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The reliability of the instruments using Cronbach Alpha method were 0.85 and 0.83 respectively. The items in the two instruments were weighted on a 4-point response scale. Two research instruments titled " Teaching Mentoring Questionnaire (MPQ) " and " Academic Staff Professional Competence Questionnaire (ASPCQ) " were developed and validated for data collection. One research hypothesis was raised to guide the study. A correlation research design was adopted for the study. This present research gathered data from 200 academic staff on teaching mentoring and academic staff professional competence in universities in Cross River State, Nigeria. Mentoring has been recognized over the years as being critical to improving professional competence and growth of organizational members. The research was conducted in agreement with Hendricks, Young-Jones and Foutch’s (2011) assertion: “If professors knew why students cheat and how to prevent the ‘need’ to be dishonest, students would benefit more from their classes….” Results do shed light on students’ perspectives, including their experience of high degrees of pressure. These themes aligned with the themes of focus group discussions and official reports of malpractice. The students’ writing was coded and analyzed for patterns and themes. Reports of malpractice on which the university has taken action during the past two years were examined. Focus group discussions were held among faculty concerning their knowledge of examination malpractice and their observations. Students were asked to answer anonymously, in writing, questions about their knowledge of and/or involvement in examination malpractice. This presentation will report results of a research project in the Faculty of Education, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria. We need to assure that those who claim university degrees when they run for office or seek leadership positions have exercised integrity in pursuit of their degrees and that they have the knowledge base they claim to have.
